Cara Menyatakan Pendapat Secara Sopan Bahasa Inggris

" Cara menyatakan pendapat tambahan..."

Ben: It's a nice house.
Vera: Yes. And the garden's pretty.
Ben: It's near a bus stop.
Vera: Also, it's in a quiet street.
Ben: And also, It's a nice area.

Vera: The lounge room's big.
Ben: What's more (apa lagi) , it's got a fireplace.
Vera: And another thing (dan lagi pula), the bedrooms are big too.

" Cara menyatakan pendapat yang bertentangan..."

Jane: I don't want to live in the country.
Vera: But you might like living there.
Jane: I might like living there but I think country towns are too quiet.
Vera: However (tetapi), the people are very friendly.

Catatan: But biasanya menghubungkan dua anak kalimat menjadi satu kalimat.

However, the people are friendly. The people are friendly, however.

Contoh penggunaan kata but dan however dalam kalimat

Ben: Country towns are quiet but the people are very friendly.
Vera: But I don't think I'd like to live in one.

- Country towns are quiet. However, the people are very friendly.
- Country towns are quiet. The people are very friendly, however.

" Cara membenarkan suatu hal...tetapi "

Ben: The house is big.
Vera: Yes, I know.
Ben: You like big houses, don't you?
Vera: Yes, I do. However, although (meskipun) the house is big, I don't like it.

Deny: Where are John and Andi?
Lucy: They went for a walk.
Deny: But it's raining.
Lucy: I know. They still went, although it was raining.

Catatan:

- Although it was raining, they went.

* Tidak boleh menggunakan kata but dalam anak kalimat kedua setelah kata although.
Kita bandingkan kalimat berikut ini;

- Durian smells bad but it tastes good.
- Although durian smells bad, it tastes good.

- They went, though it was raining.

- Vera: Even though (meskipun) I like the house, I think it's too big for us.

- No matter what you say, I don't believe it.
- It doesn't matter what you say, I don't believe it.
- Whatever you say, I don't believe it.

Kalimat warna merah berikut bermakna " Siapapun yang mengatakannya "

- No matter who said it, I don't believe it.
- It doesn't matter who said it, I don't believe it.
- Whoever said it, I don't believe it.

Kalimat warna merah berikut bermakna " Bagaimanapun murahnya "

- No matter how cheap it is, I won't buy it.
- It doesn't matter how cheap it is, I won't buy it.
- However cheap it is, I won't buy it.

Kalau kita memakai however + adjective kita tidak menuliskan koma setelah kata however, dan kalau berbicara kita tidak berhenti di antara kata however dan adjective itu.

Beberapa ungkapan lain yang berguna:

- I've made my mind up...(Saya sudah mengambil keputusan)
- My mind is made up...(Pikiranku sudah tetap)
- I won't change my mind...(Saya tidak mau mengubah pikiran saya)

* Ungkapan lain yang berguna...

Ben: In my opinion ( menurut pendapat saya) country life is better than city life.
Vera: On the other hand (sebaliknya), I think living in a city is easier.

Ben: I'm thinking about getting a new job.

- Well, It's up to you (terserah saudara), but I think you should talk to Jane about it first.
- She may not want you to change jobs.

Though dan anyway juga dipakai dalam diskusi dan perdebatan;

- I understand your argument. I don't agree with you, though. (.., though. = .., however)
- Anyway, my mind is made up. (anyway = bagaimanapun...)
