Penggunaan Kata Kerja yang Kacau Dalam Bahasa Inggris

VERBS OFTEN CONFUSED


MAKE & DO

do: mengerjakan
Salah: Please, make your homework.
Benar: Please, do your homework.


LIE & LAY

lie (lay, lain): berbaring, beristirahat

Salah: Iam going to lay down for an hour.
Benar: Iam going to lie down for an hour.

lay (laid, laid): meletakkan
Salah: Please, lie this letter on the table.
Benar: Please, lay this letter on the table.
catatan: arti lain dari lie (lied, lied) adalah berdusta.

He has lied to me.
I caught him lying.


SIT & SEAT

sit (sat, sat): duduk
Salah: they seat at the desk and write letters.
Benar: They sit at the desk and write letters.

seat (seated, seated): menyediakan tempat duduk.
Salah: They sat the guests one by one.
Benar: They seated the guests one by one


RISE & RAISE

rise (rose, risen): bangun, bangkit
Salah: The man raise and begin working.
Benar: The man rose and began working.

raise (raised, raised): mengangkat (tangan, muka, dll)
Salah: The students rise their hands and ask questions.

LIKE & LOVE

like: suka, senang
Salah: Everyone loves polite people.

love: senang, cinta
Salah: Parents like their children.
Benar: Parents love their children.
Catatan: love berada dalam tingkatan yang lebih kuat dari like.


STAY & REMAIN

stay: tinggal
Salah: We remained in a luxurious hotel.
Benar: We stayed in a luxurious hotel.

remain: tinggal
Salah: Only three books stay.
Benar: Only three books remain.
Perkecualian: I will stay (remain) at home until tomorrow.


HANGED & HUNG

hang (hanged, hanged): menggantung
Salah: The murderer was caught and hung.
Benar: The murderer was caught and hanged.

hang (hung, hung): menggantungkan
Salah: He hanged the picture on the wall.
Benar: He hung the picture on the wall.
catatan: bila berhubungan dengan suatu pembunuhan, maka digunakan hanged.


WEAR & PUT ON

wear: memakai
Salah: That woman always puts on red shoes.
Benar: That woman always wears red shoes.

put on: mengenakan, memakai.
Salah: Please, wear your dress.
Benar: Please, put on your dress.

Catatan: wear berarti memakai, sedangkan put on adalah tindakan sekejap untuk memakai. Put on hampir sama artinya dengan dress dan diikuti obyek orang, bukan benda.


TEAR & TEAR UP

tear: merobek
Salah: She tore up her dress on a nail.
Benar: She tore her dress on a nail.

tear up: merobek (sampai hancur)
Salah: She got angry and tore her dress.
Benar: She got angry and tore up her dress.


GROW & GROW UP

grow: bertumbuh (menjadi besar)
Salah: The baby grows up quickly.
Benar: The baby grows quickly.

grow up: bertumbuh (menjadi dewasa)
Salah: When I grow, I want to be a pilot.
Benar: When I grow up, I want to be a pilot.


PICK & PICK UP

pick: memetik
Salah: The girl picked up some flowers in the garden.
Benar: The girl picked some flowers in the garden.

pick up: mengambil, menungut
Salah: The man picked a stone and threw it at the dog.
Benar: The man picked up a stone and threw it at the dog.

Catatan: pick up secara idiomatik berarti menjemput.

 DEAL WITH & DEAL IN

deal with: sehubungan dengan
Salah: This book deals in common errors.
Benar: This book deals with common errors.

deal in: berdagang
Salah: The store deals with books.
Benar: The store deals in books.

Catatan: deal with juga dapat berarti berurusan dengan.

I will not deal with him again.
I have something to deal with you.
We never deal with him anymore.


BORROW & LEND

borrow: meminjam, (dari)
Salah: I want to lend his car.
Benar: I want to borrow his car.

lend: meminjamkan (kepada)
Salah: Please, borrow me your car.
Benar: Please, lend me your car.
May I borrow your pen?
Please, lend me your pen.


STEAL & ROB

steal: mencuri
Salah: Someone robbed all his money.
Benar: Someone stole all his money.

Rob: merampok
Salah: Some men stole the bank last night.
Benar: Some men robbed the bank last night.

Catatan
Obyek dari kata kerja steal adalah benda seperti uang, sepeda, mobil dan lainnya sedangkan obyek dari kata kerja rob adalah orang atau tempat seperti man, house, bank dan lain-lain.

The man was robbed last night.
My cat was stolen a couple of days ago.
A man robbed a bank and got away with two billion rupiahs.
